Rapid EV Charging points in Kendal
Rapid EV charging points at Booths, Kendal
In September 2019, Electricity North West teams in Preston and Carlisle worked alongside Instavolt to connect four new rapid EV charging points at Independent family owned Booths in Kendal.
As the UK continues its transition to a low carbon economy, sales of electric vehicles are rising and it’s becoming increasingly important to create a public network of charging points to meet the demand. Electricity North West are proud to be working with Instavolt, one of the UK’s leading providers of rapid electric vehicle (EV) chargers, to support this transition to a more sustainable future for personal transport.
Booths is currently in the process of installing over 100 charging points at all its stores across the North West and North East of England, enabling customers to charge while they shop. These charging stations are available to use on a pay-as-you-go basis with no subscription or membership needed and will become a significant part of the UK’s public charging infrastructure.
Electricity North West worked with Instavolt at Booths in Kendal to install four new Rapid Charging stations in the customer car park, providing our expertise in EV connections and understanding of the network to find the best possible design solution and point of connection.
The location of this 270kVA metered supply project created a number of engineering challenges. The charging points needed to be installed on the ground floor of the one-way, small scale multi storey car park with a mix of uneven surfaces and moving traffic. Low Voltage (LV) cable was laid from Booth's kiosk to allow engineers to connect to the Low Voltage distribution board in the nearest substation located across the road.
Our teams coordinated the works closely with everyone involved including Instavolt and Booths, to help minimise the impact of the works on both domestic and business customers. In order to terminate the new cable into our LV board during the delivery phase of the project, Electricity North West established the least impactful day and time of the week to carry out the the Planned Supply Interruptions (PSI). The High Voltage Outage took place on a Monday morning when traffic and customer footfall would be at its lowest point, balancing the needs of both business and domestic customers.
“InstaVolt have been constructing multiple electric vehicle infrastructure installations across the North West and Lake District installing both rapid and ultra-rapid EV chargers. InstaVolt have been working very closely with Electricity North West who have provided multiple connections allowing us to energise and make available for public use. We are pleased with the service received by Electricity North West and look forward to working with them on current and future projects, increasing the infrastructure for the EV community.” - Operations Manager, Instavolt.
