Power lines removed from scenic spot in North Pennines

Work is set to get under way next week to remove overhead power lines near the picturesque market town of Alston in the North Pennines.

On Monday engineers from Electricity North West, the region’s power network operator, will start to remove 280m of overhead power lines and five electricity poles which have been in place for more than 45 years.

The company has worked alongside the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership to invest £42,000 in burying these overhead power lines to help improve the views for local residents and visitors to the area.

Paul McGonigle, programme delivery manager for Electricity North West, said: “Our power lines have stood the test of time and have served the area well for more than 45 years.

“We’re delighted to be able to look to the future and underground these cables to ensure the community can enjoy the local landscape for years the come.”

This is first of three projects for the area and before winter it is anticipated that a total of 2.6km of overhead power line and 40 electricity poles will be removed from the local area.

Simon Wilson, planning and strategic access officer for the North Pennines AONB Partnership, said: “We indicated that removing this section of overhead power line would greatly enhance the landscape character and scenic beauty and we’re thrilled that Electricity North West is investing their time to make this happen.

“We have been working closely with Electricity North West and our successful partnership will result in a further two projects in the area which is great news for the local community.”

To allow engineers to carry out the work safely a temporary road closure at The Loaning will be required for approximately three weeks starting on Monday 25th April. Advance warning signs and a diversion route will be clearly signposted.
