Engineers complete major £3m power upgrade in Stalybridge
On Monday (1 October) engineers completed the £3m power upgrade project which benefits 58,000 customers in Stalybridge, Buxton, Glossop and the High Peak areas.
More than 50 people from Electricity North West, from engineers to project managers, worked on the project to replace 7.4km of underground power cables. 
The cables, which had been powering the area since the 1960s, have been replaced with new updated and environmentally-friendly electricity cables.
During the project Stamford Street was closed to allow engineers to safely carry out the work with this key route reopened ahead of schedule.
Ahead of the final phase of the project, which started on 4 August, 1,500 letters were issued to local residents and businesses and more than 2,000 leaflets were handed out to customers at a stand at the local Tesco superstore on Trinity Street, Stalybridge.
Paul McGonigle, transmission circuits manager for Electricity North West, said: “I’m proud of the engineers for the work they’ve done on this essential project. We’ve finished the cable work, with some minor work to reinstate the road on Blandford Street over the next couple of weeks.
“It’s not an easy task to replace 7.4km of underground cable, but they’ve done a great job and we’re delighted to be able to invest in the power network for local businesses and residents to enjoy for years to come.
“We all take electricity for granted every day and it’s essential projects like this that make it happen.
“We know that although we worked hard to keep disruption to a minimum, digging up and closing roads is never easy for local residents and businesses so we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their patience and support during the project.”
Liam Billington, councillor for Stalybridge South, said: “It has been difficult for Stalybridge residents and businesses over the past couple of weeks, but the investment from Electricity North West in upgrading our dated infrastructure means there will be fewer faults for residents and businesses in future.
“Stalybridge has been selected as part of the town centre challenge to regenerate our town centre and the increased capacity to the network will support new homes and businesses in our town.”
