Green skills

As we move towards a low carbon economy, we’ll all see changes in our daily lives at home and in the workplace. These changes include driving electric vehicles and installing charge points, changing our heating systems to air or ground source heat pumps and even generating our own energy using renewable generation sources such as solar and wind power.

As these technologies become more commonplace, demand will grow for people with ‘green skills’ – the skills needed to install, repair and maintain these kinds of technologies.

Green skills will be essential to support the UK’s journey to net zero but are currently in short supply.

In January 2023, our HR director, Rachael Parr joined Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham at the launch of the Green Skills Academy, Manchester, and urged employers to adopt a green mindset and take action to tackle the looming green skills gap.

The first of its kind in the north, the Green Skills Academy will play a critical role in Greater Manchester’s ambitions to reach net zero. It will house the latest green technology equipment and offer a number of courses to help you gain the knowledge and skills you need to face the challenges presented by the global transition to a net zero economy.

We are working closely with the academy and our partners to drive our own green skills agenda and opportunities, and we encourage businesses in Greater Manchester to do the same. Find out more about the Green Skills Academy and our apprenticeship programme.
