Smart Street research
Smart Street research
The Smart Street research workstream was jointly led by The University of Manchester and Queen’s University, Belfast who carried out the research and analysis of data collected, to prove the project hypotheses and deliver the key project learning.
The universities have published reports drawing out conclusions, based on the cost benefit analysis, for a distribution network operator to transform low voltage (LV) radial networks into interconnected LV networks using the dynamic voltage regulation techniques.
The outputs from the research workstream can be found below.
Interim report on carbon accounting
Interim evaluation of the potential carbon saving benefits of the Smart Street method using a methodology developed by the University of Manchester.
Interim cost benefit assessment study
Methodology used to develop a techno-economic model, a business case model and a CBA framework, to evaluate the cost benefits of Smart Street.
Interim voltage and configuration optimisation
Describes the methodology, simulation work and analysis of trial data to quantify the effects of conservation voltage reduction.
Interim design of interconnected LV networks
Describes the methodology and simulation work carried out to assess the impact of interconnecting the low voltage network.
Optimisation implementation strategy
Describes the means by which a communications network, required to run Smart Street, can be established and the settings used during the trial phase.
Final report on carbon accounting
Final evaluation of the potential carbon savings of the Smart Street method produced by the University of Manchester.
Final cost benefit assessment study
Final report on the techno-economic model, business case model and CBA framework, used to evaluate the cost benefits of Smart Street.
Final voltage and configuration optimisation
Final report on the simulation work and analysis of trial data to quantify the effects of conservation voltage reduction.
Smart Street design and operation of LV interconnected networks
Sets out how to cost effectively transform the radial low voltage (LV) network as an interconnected system, including consideration of any protection changes required.
