Transition
The UK is committed to delivering ambitious targets for reductions in carbon emissions. As a result our customers are using more low carbon technologies such as electric vehicles and solar generation.
These new technologies are changing the way that companies, communities and customers generate, distribute and consume energy.
The Government’s Smart Systems and Flexibility Plan demonstrates a clear requirement to transition to a distribution system operator (DSO) model which will enable early adoption and implementation of new technologies and commercial opportunities. The transition to DSO has the potential to bring significant benefits to customers. It also brings a range of challenges and risks for market participants, new entrants and network operators.
The Transition project will help progress this change by developing and demonstrating a ‘neutral market facilitator’ (NMF) platform. This will test the operation of the proposed market models developed by the Electricity Network Association’s Open Networks Project and pave the way for DSO transition.
Led by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks in partnership with Electricity North West, Transition has the potential to deliver benefits of up to £292 million to network customers by 2050.
The project is funded under Ofgem's Network Innovation Competition and runs from October 2019 – December 2022.
