Smart meters

Smart meters

Between 2015 and 2025, 53 million smart electricity and gas meters will be installed in over 26 million households across Wales, Scotland and England.

What are smart meters?

Smart meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters. They show you exactly how much energy you are using in near real time and what it costs, so they will help you realise savings and benefits never before available. Smart meters send accurate meter readings to energy suppliers, so you will always receive an accurate bill. And they will enable you to switch energy provider more smoothly.

As demand for electricity increases in the low carbon future, smart meters will become a vital part of how the electricity network is managed by supporting the development of a wide range of new technologies and services. They will lay the foundation for Great Britain's move to a lower carbon future and a secure energy supply.

How do I get a smart meter?

The rollout of smart meters will be carried out by the energy supply companies between now and 2025. How soon you can get one depends on your supplier's plans. Find out who your supplier is or find out more about the smart meter rollout

Although the energy supply companies are responsible for the rollout, distribution network operators like ourselves need to prepare for smart meters to be able to benefit from the data they will provide in the future.

Our first challenge will be to help you and the supply companies with the transition to the new meters. At the same time we will train our employees and upgrade our IT systems so we can use smart meter data for your benefit. We are also working with suppliers to ensure you are properly informed about smart meters.

Once approximately 70% of smart meters are installed in your homes and businesses we can start to deliver the benefits for you and for our business.
