LineSIGHT monitoring device
What is LineSIGHT?
LineSight is an exciting new electrical technology which we are installing onto our overhead power line network throughout the North West. It will give us fast, accurate locations of faults or damages, downed power lines and other issues. We have 160,000 wooden overhead line poles across 1,000 circuits, with many in rural or mountainous areas. LineSight will support in identifying developing issues before they happen, or help fix power cuts quicker if they occur.
How does it work?
The monitoring equipment with its predictive technology allows us to accurately locate issues on our network such as downed lines and low hanging cables, and to detect component deterioration and intermittent problems developing
Public safety is our priority
The primary driver for the LineSIGHT technology is safety. It enables us to install sensors on sections of overhead lines to detect dangerous low-hanging or fallen power lines, which remain live. This creates a public safety hazard, which can be a particular issue during extreme storm events. The highlighted faulty section of network can then be immediately made dead to remove the risk, thereby protecting the public from a hazardous and potentially life-threatening situation.
To report a damage, hazard or dangerous situation please call us on 105. Stay over 5 meters away from the hazard as the electricity asset or equipment may still be live or become live. This can result in risk of injury or death through electrical burn, electrocution or explosion. Do not leave the site and keep other parties over 5 meters away from the hazard.
What are the benefits?
- Faster restoration times during a power cut as it rapidly locates the cause, reducing the need for engineers to ‘walk the line’ to find the issue
- To assist with automated restoration and allowing us to quickly allocate the correct resources when incidents occur
- Highlights priority areas for maintenance, upgrades and replacements
- Over 750,000 customers fed wholly or partially by high voltage overhead lines will benefit from this innovation.
We are installing over 3,000 devices in the Northwest over the next few years, to make sure we can continue to provide a reliable network supplying your property.
Where is the LineSIGHT system being installed?
10% of our network is deemed as higher risk and will have a greater density of sensors (one every 2km – 400 sensors), whilst the rest will have a sensor every 4km (7,200 sensors).
How we will let you know about a planned power cut when installing LineSIGHT
You will receive a postcard similar to the below with details about the planned power cut a few days before with a minimum of 48 hours notice.
